Original concoctions

You there, parched guy in the overalls. We’ve compiled a list of the most original alcoholic concoctions in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth, just for you. Why? Well, some of them are pretty messed up, which seems your speed. But also because we’re launching a series about the most original things to discover in each of the aforementioned cities, and genuinely weird alcoholic beverages seemed like the right place to start.

Like most of madman and all-round visionary Michael Delany's concoctions, the best part of The Bottom End's Stolichnaya Vodka–based, Tom Yum–spiked Bloody Mary is the name. (It is also delicious, and we want immediately.)

Where: The Bottom End, 579 Little Collins St, Melbourne

When: Saturday 9pm–9am

How Much: $18

Anchor Bar do a Bloody Mary with mescal, tawny port, spiced clamato juice and citrus. Then they serve it with a jerky stick and crab claw, so if you really want to 'nip' a hangover in the bud then this is the answer. Bottoms up, anchors away and fair winds!

Where: Anchor Bar, 8 Campbell Pde, Bondi Beach

When: Tuesday to Friday 4.30pm–late, Saturday to Sunday and public holidays 12.30pm–late

How Much: $20

Izakaya-style dining wouldn't be complete without some OTT drinks. Wagaya not only make an impression with their touchscreen menus, but on your birthday you get a free drink according to your birthstone. Born in June? Pearl cocktail, no sweat. December? Turquoise, and so on… Sure your January garnet cocktail may not be the deep red you so desired, but the good juju is still in there.

Where: Wagaya, Lvl 1, TCB Centre, 315 Brunswick St, Fortitude Valley

When: Lunch 12–2.30pm, dinner 5.30pm–late

How Much: Free (if it's your birthday)

Local Perth bar, The Classroom – which happens to be themed just like a high-school science room – turns the classic cocktail swag up several percentiles and decibels. How? One, their Meringue Negroni's got towery peaks of orange-scented meringue on top; and two, it's charred with an actual bunsen burner. No bartenders lost their eyebrows in the making of this cocktail.

Where: The Classroom, 356 Charles St, North Perth
When: Tuesday to Friday 4pm–late, Saturday to Sunday 12pm–late

How Much:  $18

The Big Bear is the middle brother in a family of 'Spiked Shakes' from Jack Ruby. Whisky? Not so weird. Maple syrup? Everyone knows what maple syrup is. But the final ingredient, “pancake ice-cream”? Pancake ice-cream. Umm...

Where: Jack Ruby, Basement, 89 King William St, Adelaide

When: Monday to Thursday 11am–midnight, Friday 11am–late, Saturday midday–late

How Much:  $12
