Brendan Maclean

Original Everything

Brendan Maclean

In the entertainment industry there's something known as a triple threat, then there's a Brendan Maclean. Writer, actor, musician, presenter, illustrator and all around great guy, Brendan Maclean is one of the most multi-talented people in the country. He's written for some of Australia's top online publications including FasterLouder and Junkee, worked as a presenter on Triple J, had a viral hit with his music video for 'Stupid' and starred in Baz Luhrmann's recent adaptation of The Great Gatsby - and that's just all in the past 12 months.

Brendan also helped us kick off the launch of ORNGL.TV with an unforgettable performance at the launch party in Sydney last month. There's really not much this guy can't do.

“For me a project is basically useless if there isn't some element of 'new'.”

“I think I come from the Lily Allen school of song writing.”

So, you're a musician, performer, actor, writer, presenter, illustrator... is there anything you can't do ?

Basketball. My father tried to get me to play it, on the first pass I hurled the ball into a team mates crotch. I was not allowed on the court after that.

You played Klipspring in Baz Luhrmann's 'The Great Gatsby', any similarities between you and the character aside form your piano playing talents ?

Well I'm not saying I'm a alcohol fuelled, mooching hipster but I'm also not NOT saying that.

Where are you focusing your energy now? What's coming up for you ?

Earlier this year I came into some unbelievable generosity in the form of Pozible crowd-funding. Things got delayed with Gatsby and the Heavenly Sounds Tour with Kate Miller-Heidke, now it's time to do nothing but kick some songwriting goals on the album. Paul Mac, James from Sietta and some other special producers are apart of the project - the next single is out mid-september. It's pretty explosive.

How much does a sense of originality guide your project choices, especially being a creative multi-tasker ?

For me a project is basically useless if there isn't some element of "new". But we're all students of what came before; drawing on inspiration, idols and history can offer it's own kind of originality. Freddie Mercury is one of the most original artists in pop history but even he was drawing on Opera and musical theatre. The trick is to making that history yours.

Music wise, tell us about your creative process ?

I think I come from the Lily Allen school of song writing. I'm fairly literal. I like to bend sentences I've said into a melody. "If you weren't so stupid I could have loved you." is something I texted to someone. I just read it back and heard the rhythm in the words.

Finally, what does originality mean to you ?

Freedom. Intelligence. Love. Art. And freaking out people at corporate gigs.
