It started with a meeting at Peels restaurant in NYC. One cook, one photographer, a great idea and an action plan. Tara Striano and Maria del Mar are the dynamic duo behind the blog Cookin’ and Shootin’.
Tara shoots, Maria cooks and together their website has garnered a huge following for it’s delicious recipes and pictures that make your mouth water. Now, with a soon-to-be-released book “Winter Cocktails” both Tara and Maria are poised to make a very original stamp in both food and photography.
“We’re out-and-about a lot, eating, drinking, grocery shopping … Ideas for shoots and recipes pop up from a number of places.”
“We always have a good time while we’re working. We laugh, eat, drink, & create.”
Since the blog started, we’ve been hired as a team multiple times, for “real” jobs in the photography/food industry, and most importantly, we had the great fortune to collaborate on a book.
Clearly, food motivates us, as well as the ongoing challenge to create better images each time we shoot. And of course, hunger: the sooner we’re done shooting, the sooner we get to eat the set food!
We’re out-and-about a lot, eating, drinking, grocery shopping … Ideas for shoots and recipes pop up from a number of places. Often, we’ll have a drink or two after a shoot (or during, depending on what we’re shooting!) and we relax a little and toss ideas around. Process is naturally a work in progress, and we’re lucky to have a C&S as a mutual project that we can constantly develop and grow.
We always have a good time while we’re working. We laugh, eat, drink, & create. It’s amazing to have this feeling of purpose mixed with excitement and even glee over our jobs.
Between the two of us, we have been developing our own style that is quite recognizable. At this point, people will say to us, “can you shoot it Cookin’ and Shootin’ style?” We start off with an idea and build on it. Each step is photographed along the way and nothing is judged. It’s just us when we shoot for C & S, so we get to explore & experiment on set — something that we don’t often get to do at work. It’s a lot of fun & we always end up with a beautiful end product.
Our motto, “A little messy is always better.” And, “Pretty, but not too pretty,” is very us.
