Strut Your Stuff

Jay Strut

Jay Strut is a Toronto-based fashion blogger with an outsized proportion of zeal and innate swagger. At just 22, Jay’s blog has gone viral as he's established himself as a tour de force on the international fashion scene. Easily recognizable for his eye popping outfits, when Jay's not mingling with celebrities at fashion parties in New York or London, he is focusing on growing his brand and working on his original music. His drive to continue to create meaningful social media partnerships with brands while growing, is his ultimate goal. ORGNL.TV sat down with Jay to learn more about his blog, his brand, and what makes him original. Here’s what he had to say.

“If you’re going to do it, commit. If you’re going to wear it, commit to the look. If you’re going to be in it, commit to the game.”

VENIAM VIDEBO VINCET: I will come, I will see, I will conquer.

Who is Jay Strut?

It’s funny because on Facebook, I put “fictional character.” Jay Strut is a fashion blogger based out of Toronto who likes to work with brands and create online experiences through social media, fashion, technology and music – and whatever else he can dip his fingers in.

How did you start out?

I actually started out because my mom has a dress store called Powder. I would go on her email and email designers and say I was coming to their show and sneak into fashion week when I was 16 or 17. I went to college for about two weeks and got an email from Marc Jacobs communications to come by New York fashion week. It kind of all started significantly from there.

Tell us about your blog

My blog, originally, used to be an outlet for me to cover fashion shows, parties, what I love. Now, because I’ve been growing a lot more, especially in the last year, it’s become more of a diary of the projects I do. A lot of the work is through social media, and then my blog summarizes everything that’s happened from Twitter, Instagram etc.

Does art come naturally to you?

Art in the form of expression does. I do music, fashion. It just happens.

How would you say your brand has evolved from when you first started until now?

I’ve grown way more of a backbone. I’m a lot fiercer. My brand has definitely grown so much – I do it full time now. It’s what I go to sleep doing, wake up doing, it’s what I do on the weekends, when I’m out at a party, it’s every aspect of who I am. That’s what I’m really obsessed with. I get to do this all the time and I get to be me. I think that’s really important. Between then and now, it’s been such a crazy rollercoaster with all the travelling and getting to meet amazing people and grow as a person and brand. It’s been very exciting.

What motivates you?

Glamour – not red carpet, but from a life perspective. To not struggle in life, be able to do what I want to do when I want to do it, travel and see the world as well as experience things the best way they can be experienced. Also, to not miss out on opportunities. YOLO.

What makes you original?

There are so many different blogs and I think the beauty of the industry is that every person makes their own blog different. It could be the way they style themselves, the way they write. I think that what makes me original is myself.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

If you’re going to do it, commit. If you’re going to wear it, commit to the look. If you’re going to be in it, commit to the game.
