Edinburgh based "Nasty P" (aka Mr Paul Rutherford, experienced producer, songwriter, DJ & promoter), takes it back to the golden age with his soul inspired cuts, effortlessly blending booming 808 kicks with current synth sounds.
If you are from Scotland and you like hip hop and you haven't heard of him, you really should move that rock!
"First of all, I have to feel inspired for what I do"
Nasty P was awarded the Global Stoli Artist of The Year in 2012
As an artist he has worked with Akil from the famous Jurassic 5, critically-acclamimed rhymester m.c Oddisee, Skinnyman & more. In his role as a producer Nasty continues to fire out remixes after catching the ears of indie-pop big-hitters Florence + The Machine, Mark Ronson, and UK rap crew Foreign Beggars.
As a DJ he has supported the cream of the Hip-Hop crop, from Ghostface Killah and KRS-One to Slum Village and Roots Manuva -- and he was recently awarded the coveted opening slot for none other than Talib Kweli.
With an impressive discography of albums and mixtapes from the critically-acclaimed "When the Smoke Clears" to his well-received and still-played "it sounds nicer when it's nasty" mash up album which included the famous "watchtower problem" with Jay-Z vs Jimi Hendrix track, clocking up 70,000 views on YouTube before being taken down due to copyright issues.
"Story So far" was his last effort which came out earlier this year on Ill Behavior Records. The Album travels on a musical safari through a jungle of up-tempo, head-nodding joints like "State of Mind" featuring verses from Akil (Jurassic 5) and hotly tipped UK artist Profisee. You then find yourself in relative calm of "Caffeine Holiday" before being led to the dark side of Nasty P's mind with "Death of Disco" and "Signs". "Soul Biscuit," featuring Skinnyman, "FIYAH," featuring ED O.G, PROFISEE, MR BANG ON, & SEROCEE and "Blessed Thing," also featuring Profisee. The journey ends with a more introspective track "Guard Your Safe" featuring US rapper Oddisee from Diamond District.
Already being caught by some of music's biggest hitters including the hugely influential Steve Lemacq and as well as receiving significant radio air play and stirring up a mountain of hype online, "The Story So Far…" marks Nasty P’s arrival as one of the most exciting UK hip hop artists in the game.
As a promoter he is currently resident and co-runner of Edinburgh's most successful midweek night "I LOVE HIP HOP," which reaches capacity almost every week.
