Mural Art in Philadelphia

It doesn’t get more Original than this!

As a Visual Artist, any time I travel or even stroll the streets of my own city, I’m always on the look out for beautiful, original street art. And that’s one thing Philadelphia is known for – it’s original mural art. Walking or driving through most neighborhoods, you can find walls adorned with gorgeous and intricate paintings - each one with it’s own story to tell. These walls aren’t just painted without a purpose in mind. They are carefully thought out pieces that some times take weeks and months to complete, making each one a true original piece of art. They connect neighborhoods, they educate the masses and they spark conversation. Everything a beautiful piece of art should be.

"Nothing beats seeing these beautiful works of art in person."

Take the Love Letters Tour!

It’s pretty amazing to see such great works of art in such large scale. And in June 2013, one of my favorite murals debuted. With close to 3000 painted walls sprinkled throughout the city, Philadelphia’s Mural Arts launched it’s latest and highly anticipated mural of none other than the legendary group, The Roots. This was a special unveiling because it really represented a long journey that friends and fans took with them. An artists’ collective called The Amber Group is responsible for the dynamic work of art. The group is made up of 7 talented Visual Artist’s with it’s lead artist being fellow Philly 360 Creative Ambassador, Tatyana Fazlalizadeh. The other artists include Charles Barbin, David Guinn, Willis "Nomo" Humphrey, Keir Johnston, and Ernel Martinez. The mural is located at 512 S. Broad Street, not far from CAPA, where Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson and Tariq “Black Thought” Trotter first met bringing them full circle. The Roots mural will now go down in history with other well-known Philadelphia murals such as Dr. J, The Tuskegee Airmen, Love Letters, Grover Washington Jr. and more.

One of the really cool features on the Mural Arts website are their Mural Tours. You can choose what type of tour you’re taking – trolley, guided, bike or even just a self guided tour. Whether you live in Philadelphia or not, you can experience many of the walls in an online interactive mural tour narrated by another fellow Philly 360 Creative Ambassador, Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson of The Roots. He walks you through a series of gorgeous murals from the Iconic Images Collection and tells the story behind the piece which is also accompanied by a photo. How awesome is that!

Nothing beats seeing these beautiful works of art in person. But being able to see it at all is a treat as well. After checking out the murals, take a peek at a few of my favorite muralists in Philadelphia.
